Norway Cruise on MS Trollfjord
In September 2024 Jeannie voyaged on the MS Trollfjord up the coast of Norway from Tromsø to Svalbard. It was a wonderful way to experience the true Norwegian coastline, breathtaking scenery and local lifestyle while travelling deep into the Arctic Circle aboard Hurtigruten.

MS Trollfjord
MS Trollfjord is a smaller expedition-style ship, which enables it to sail into ports and remote locations that larger cruise ships simply cannot access. Rather than focusing on large-scale entertainment, the experience onboard is all about immersing yourself in the dramatic scenery, wildlife and unique culture surrounding you every day.
The onboard Coastal Experience Team provide fascinating talks and presentations throughout the voyage, sharing information about Norwegian history, Arctic wildlife and each destination along the route. There is also an onboard photographer who hosts workshops and presentations on photographing wildlife and the northern lights, even helping guests set up their own cameras to capture those magical moments.

Accommodation onboard was comfortable and cosy, perfectly suited to the Arctic environment. The cabins are thoughtfully designed with everything guests need after a day of exploring.
For guests wanting to stay active while enjoying the fresh Arctic sea air, there is a walking circuit around Deck 6. There is also a gym and sauna onboard, both featuring panoramic windows looking out across the sea and fjords.
By night, the ship transforms into the perfect place for stargazing and northern lights watching. Deck 9 features a cosy panoramic bar with light entertainment, creating the perfect atmosphere to sit back and watch the ever-changing Arctic skies.
Dining Onboard MS Trollfjord
There are three restaurants onboard, all showcasing local Norwegian cuisine and fresh regional produce.
Flora is the main restaurant where breakfast, lunch and dinner are served. Breakfast and lunch are buffet style, while dinner is selected from an excellent à la carte menu.
One thing Jeannie highly recommends trying is the traditional Norwegian brown cheese, which has a surprisingly sweet caramel-like flavour and is often served on warm waffles.

Brasserie Árran offers traditional Norwegian dishes with a modern twist and is available for both lunch and dinner.
The final restaurant, Røst, is primarily for suite guests but can also be upgraded to by cabin guests wishing to enjoy something extra special. It offers an elevated dining experience along with Norwegian-inspired afternoon tea on sea days, making it ideal for celebrating a special occasion or simply treating yourself.
The Norwegian Coast and Svalbard
One of the biggest highlights of the voyage is undoubtedly the scenery. Every day brings towering fjords, dramatic coastlines, tiny fishing villages and endless Arctic landscapes.

The route also gives guests the opportunity to experience remote Arctic destinations and fascinating wildlife encounters.
Honningsvåg
Honningsvåg is a lovely town to explore on foot and offers stunning scenery all around. The nearby mountain climb is relatively easy thanks to the stepped pathway leading to the summit, where visitors are rewarded with spectacular panoramic views.

Longyearbyen
Longyearbyen offers visitors the chance to truly experience life in the Arctic. Jeannie particularly recommends the cycle tour, which is a fantastic way to explore the area while learning about the history and daily life of this remote settlement.

Ny-Ålesund
Ny-Ålesund is the world’s northernmost settlement and now operates mainly as an international scientific research base. During the visit, Jeannie spotted reindeer and seals amongst the incredible Arctic surroundings.

The scenery around Svalbard was simply unforgettable, with floating ice, calm waters and dramatic mountain backdrops creating an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the world.
Jeannie’s Top Tips
• If you are worried about seasickness, Jeannie recommends wearing sea bands on your wrists. Seasickness tablets are also available onboard from reception, and ginger shots are served at breakfast. For advice on preventing seasickness whilst cruising, visit the NHS Motion Sickness Advice Link.
• If you wish to dine at Brasserie Árran, it is best to pre-book to avoid disappointment.
• Excursions fill quickly, so it is highly recommended to book them at the same time as booking your cruise.
• Pack layers and warm outerwear even in September, especially for evening northern lights viewing.
The Highlight of the Trip
Overall, Jeannie absolutely loved the entire experience onboard Hurtigruten MS Trollfjord and described it as one of the most memorable trips she has ever taken.
The true highlight of the voyage was seeing the northern lights on two consecutive nights — something completely unexpected so early in the season and a genuine bucket list moment.

Whether you are looking for dramatic scenery, authentic Norwegian culture, Arctic wildlife or the chance to witness the northern lights, a voyage aboard MS Trollfjord offers a truly unforgettable experience.
